May 27, 2012 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President, Jim Samsel at 7:07 PM. Officers present were Jim Samsel, Joe Podesta, Tom Moore, George Laverick, and Kevin Lilly. Several members and guests were also present.

Minutes of the April 22, 2012 meeting were read by George Laverick, and were accepted as read.

Treasurer's Report

No Treasurer's report was given as the Treasurer was absent.

Armorer's Report

Kevin Lilly reported that there has been no change since last month.

Range Report

The range is in good shape. The tops of the pistol range berms have been cut, the tractor was repaired and the grass was mowed on the rifle range. A guide wheel has been mounted on the gate so that it is easier to open and close. Trash was emptied and the pertinent areas have been sprayed for wasps.

Caution: wasps appear to be building nests in the tops of the trash containers. BE CAREFUL!

The Executive Officer will remove the loose steel plates and stakes from the pistol range since they are a safety hazard.

Tom indicated that he had met with Paragon Systems about the condition of the barrier posts on the left pistol range. The Executive Officer is authorized to purchase materials needed to maintain the left pistol range in support of the rentals.

Members are cautioned that the posts on the left pistol range should not be used as target holders; they are barriers for our renters to use in combat training.

Old Business

Henry Krippner advised Jim Samsel that no objections have been raised to our use of the ADPS indoor range, but it is still being reviewed by the city's legal department.

The Rifle Range Extension Committee has identified what appears to be a practical plan for a 300yd range and has drafted a preliminary Statement of Work. They are planning one more survey trip to the range on Sunday, June 10 to consider how best to deal with a gully that is located at the 200yd mark.

New Business

Tom Moore recommended establishing a committee to assist him in physical maintenance of the range. He is particularly interested in people with appropriate skills and tools. The Executive Officer will write a description of the committee and its duties to present to the Executive Committee.

Tom also brought up the case where the gate lock failed and a member got locked inside the range. Jim recommended that Tom install a second combination lock in-line with the first (but having a different combination so that in that situation the member could call an officer for the emergency combination to get the gate open.

Jim Samsel pointed out that the club treasury has been growing, and that we need to identify some appropriate ways to spend some of the money. No formal action was taken by the Executive Committee, but, if you have an idea to improve the range and are willing to follow up the idea, present it to the Executive committee, either by email to any of the officers or by personally presenting your idea at an Executive Committee meeting.

One application for membership was approved.

Joe Podesta moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Tom Moore. The meeting was adjourned at 7:54PM.

Until further notice, the Executive Committee meetings will be held at 7:00PM, the fourth Sunday of each month at Harbor Chase, 1385 Silver Bluff Road, Aiken. Coffee, Iced Tea, and cookies will be served.
